Act 02 — The Detail
Monfett Electric installs Level 2 home EV chargers across the Pioneer Valley. A typical install is a dedicated 240 volt circuit on a 40 to 60 amp breaker, sized after a load calculation on the existing panel, with the permit pulled and the inspection handled.
What a Level 2 install involves
A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and usually wants a 40 to 60 amp breaker on its own circuit. Before anything goes on the wall we run a load calculation on the existing panel, because the question is never whether the charger fits, it is whether the service feeding the house has room for it. Most panels do. Some need a subpanel, and a few need the service upgraded first, which is better to find out before the car arrives than after.
Hardwired or plug
A plug on a 14 to 50 receptacle lets you take the charger with you if you move, and it is what most manufacturers ship for. Hard wiring gives you a cleaner install, a longer cable run and higher continuous current on units that support it. Outdoors, hard wired is usually the better answer. We fit either.

Act 03 — The Answers
Often not, but it has to be checked rather than assumed. The deciding factor is a load calculation on the existing service, not the size of the panel. Many homes with a 200 amp service take a charger with no changes. A 100 amp service, or a panel with no spaces left, may need a subpanel or a service upgrade first. We run the calculation before quoting.
The charger itself is a small part of it. Cost is driven by the distance from the panel to where the car parks, whether the run is through finished space, whether the service has capacity, and whether the install is indoors or outdoors. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is a straightforward job. One at the far end of a detached garage is a different one. We quote after seeing both ends of the run.
