Electrical panel and service upgrades
A panel is a budget. Most houses in this valley are spending a 1960s budget on a 2020s life.
Act 02 — The Detail
Monfett Electric replaces electrical panels and upgrades services, commonly to 200 amps, across western Massachusetts. Typical reasons are a fuse box, a panel brand no longer considered safe, no space for new circuits, or a service with no capacity left for an EV charger or heat pump.
When a panel needs replacing
- Fuses instead of breakers
- A Federal Pacific Stab Lok or Zinsco panel, both long associated with breakers that fail to trip
- No empty spaces left, or a panel filled with tandem breakers doubled into single slots
- Rust, scorching, a burnt smell, or breakers that trip with nothing obviously wrong
- An insurance carrier asking for it in writing
- A load calculation that leaves no room for an EV charger, a heat pump or an induction range
What a service upgrade involves
The service is everything from the utility connection to the main breaker: the drop or lateral, the meter socket, the mast, the grounding and the panel itself. Upgrading it means coordinating with the utility for a disconnect and reconnect, and scheduling the inspection between the two. Power is off for most of a day. We book the utility, pull the permit and line the inspector up so it happens once.
The rebate angle worth knowing
In the Eversource towns, a panel upgrade that clears the way for electrification can qualify for the Mass Save HEAT Loan at zero interest. The catch is that three towns we serve are not on Eversource, so the program is different there. The service area page sets out which town falls where.
Act 03 — The Answers
The panel is rarely the expensive part. Cost turns on whether the service entrance, meter socket and mast are being replaced too, whether the utility connection is overhead or underground, how the grounding needs to be brought up to date, and how many circuits have to be identified and re landed. A panel swap on a sound service is a much smaller job than a full service upgrade to 200 amps. We look at the meter and the mast before quoting.
Most panel and service upgrades are a single day, with power off for the bulk of it. The utility has to disconnect and reconnect, and the inspection happens between the two, so the day is scheduled around their windows rather than ours. We tell you the night before what time to expect the lights to go out.
Both have a long documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault conditions, which defeats the one job a breaker has. Neither is recalled, and plenty are still in service, but most electricians recommend replacement and a growing number of insurance carriers ask for it. If you have one, it is worth knowing before your carrier tells you.
In the Eversource towns, a panel or service upgrade can qualify for the Mass Save HEAT Loan at zero interest when it clears the way for electrification such as a heat pump, an EV charger or an induction range. Three of the towns we serve, Chicopee, Holyoke and Westfield, are on municipal utilities rather than Eversource, so Mass Save does not apply there and the municipal programs take its place. Terms change annually and are worth confirming with the utility before you plan around them.
