Act 02 — The Detail

Why people call us for the pool
Pool work in western Massachusetts is seasonal, so most shops here do a few a year and treat each one as an unfamiliar job. I started out in Florida, where pools are not seasonal and the work is constant, and did them day in and day out before moving back. That is the whole difference: what a lot of electricians approach carefully because they see it rarely, I have done more times than I can count. It means fewer surprises, a straighter answer about what it will cost, and a pool that is open when you want to swim in it.

The part nobody can see, and why we check it
Bonding is the heart of pool electrical. Every metal part in and around the water — the shell's reinforcing steel, the ladder and rails, the pump motor, the fittings, the water itself — gets tied together with solid copper so that no two things a swimmer can touch are ever at different voltages. It is required by Article 680 of the National Electrical Code, it is buried and invisible once the deck goes down, and it is the single most common thing we find missing on older pools. Nobody sees a spark when it is wrong. Somebody feels a tingle, and that tingle is the only warning you get. We check it on every pool we touch, including ones we did not wire.
The tub arrives Thursday
Then the electric should be finished on Wednesday. A spa needs its own circuit, its own disconnect and GFCI protection, with the disconnect sited where you can see it from the tub but not reach it from the water. None of that is complicated when somebody knows the job; it only becomes a problem when it is left to delivery day. Call before the truck comes and you get in the water that weekend instead of looking at a dry tub waiting on an inspection.

An install that stalls waiting on an electrician makes the dealer look bad, not the electrician. Dealer and retailer hookups are the work we schedule around: call when the install is booked rather than when the truck is loaded, and we will pull the permit and handle the inspection so the date holds.
Act 03 — The Answers
Pool work is where my career started. I began in Florida, where swimming pools are year-round rather than seasonal work, doing several installations a day before returning to western Massachusetts. Pool electrical in the Pioneer Valley is seasonal, so most local shops handle a small number each year; this is the work I have done most.
Bonding ties every metal part in and around a pool together with solid copper so that no two surfaces a swimmer can touch are ever at different voltages. It covers the pool shell reinforcing steel, ladders and rails, the pump motor, metal fittings and the water itself. Bonding is not the same as grounding, and a pool needs both. It is required by Article 680 of the National Electrical Code, and it is the single most common thing we find missing on older pools.
Almost never. A standard 240 volt spa needs its own dedicated circuit, GFCI protection and a disconnect that you can see from the tub but cannot reach from inside it. Some smaller plug in spas run on 120 volts, but they still want a dedicated circuit rather than sharing one with the garage. Running a spa on an extension cord or an existing outlet is the usual reason a hot tub delivery ends with a failed inspection.
Yes. Pool, spa and hot tub electrical work requires an electrical permit and an inspection in every town we serve. We pull the permit under our license and meet the inspector, so it is not something you need to arrange.
Usually yes. Most older incandescent pool lights can be replaced with an LED fixture in the existing niche, which cuts the load considerably and lasts far longer. It is a good moment to check the bonding and the GFCI protection on that circuit, because a light change is often the first time anyone has looked at either in twenty years.
